Top 5 Ways to Pick a Color Palette That Will Pull Your Home Together
How many times have you walked into someone’s home and thought, Wow, this place looks amazing!? But then when you start to examine it more closely, you realize that there’s no obvious theme or style throughout the entire space. Instead, there are just random items that look like they were put together at different times and in different styles – not to mention from different places.
1) Choose a color palette inspired by nature
There’s something about nature that just makes us feel good. Maybe it’s the fact that we evolved in nature and our brains are programmed to respond positively to it. Or maybe it’s because nature is so damn pretty. Whatever the reason, using colors inspired by nature is a great way to create a color palette that will make you feel good and pulled together.
2) Use the color wheel to create perfect harmony
One way to create perfect harmony in your home is by using the color wheel. By understanding how colors work together, you can create a space that is both aesthetically pleasing and inviting. The easiest way to figure out which colors will go well together is by looking at them on the color wheel. It has 12 individual sections: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo/purple (sometimes called violet), pink (sometimes called magenta), and gray. The idea is to make sure that each of these sections are represented in some form or another so that they all flow nicely with one another.
3) Create an organized and detailed mood board
If you’re anything like me, you probably have a million ideas floating around in your head of what you want your dream home to look like. But when it comes time to actually start putting things together, you might feel a little lost. Where do you even begin? The first step is finding a color palette that speaks to you and makes you feel at home. Here are my top five ways to do just that
1) Create an organized and detailed mood board: Whether on Pinterest or in a notebook, create an organized list of all the elements that make up your favorite rooms. Include both the colors used as well as any other features that make the space special to you (i.e., particular flooring or furniture).
2) Work with a designer: You may not be able to afford an interior designer but there are plenty of free resources out there for you! Take the Houzz Tour or Design*Sponge’s Style Search Quiz. They’ll help you narrow down what styles work best for your taste. And don’t forget to search high and low on Craigslist or Kijiji—you can find some really great deals this way!
3) Think about how much time you’ll spend in each room: I love bright kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms so I usually opt for lighter shades of paint because they give off more light. However, if you know you won’t spend a lot of time in certain rooms (i.e., your basement), then dark walls could be more appropriate.
4) Give yourself options: Once you’ve narrowed down which style(s) speak to you most, choose one or two palettes that will fit into different spaces throughout your home. For example, use light colors in rooms where you’ll be spending lots of time such as your kitchen or living room. For less trafficked areas such as hallways and staircases, darker tones would better suit the space. Remember, the point of choosing multiple color schemes is to give yourself flexibility when moving from room to room. So once you figure out which scheme you want for each area, simply mix and match within those schemes until it feels right! It’s also important to keep in mind that these suggestions only apply to the exterior of your home. It doesn’t matter what colors you pick for inside as long as they make you happy 🙂
5) Find a designer or painter you can trust: The key is to find someone who really understands your vision. And while interior designers aren’t cheap, they’re still considerably cheaper than completely overhauling every single room in your house over and over again because nothing quite makes sense together.
4) Choose three shades of your favorite color
Color is one of the most important design elements in your home. It can set the tone and mood of a space, and make it feel more cohesive. But with so many options out there, how do you choose a color palette that will work for your home? You don’t have to pick just one hue-it’s all about finding three shades of your favorite color that complement each other. Here are 2 ways you can get started on choosing a color palette:
1) Choose three shades of your favorite color: Start by choosing three shades of a single hue-you don’t need them all to be the same shade or intensity, just different enough from each other to be recognizable as part of the same family. Mixing up hues and intensities gives your room depth and visual interest without being overwhelming. Try pairing light and dark versions of the same color, or complementary colors like red and green. A little bit goes a long way!
2) Start with an analogous color scheme: Complementary colors go well together because they’re opposite each other on the wheel (for example blue/orange). They’ll create a nice balance within the room while still adding plenty of visual interest.
5) Choose two neutrals
A good place to start when choosing a color palette is with two neutrals. Neutrals are colors that can be used throughout your home without being overwhelming. They act as a base for your other colors and can help tie everything together. Some popular neutrals are white, black, gray, and beige.
